Region: British Columbia Rockies
The Elkford Inn is a small hotel high within the towering Canadian Rockies that line the valley walls. It is located (Map 91 kb) in the town of Elkford ... “Wilderness Capital of BC”, which is accessible as part of a circle tour departing either from Banff, (south to Radium Hot Springs; the Bavarian-style community of Kimberley, and to Fernie) or from Calgary, Alberta (south & west) into the Elk Valley.
Elkford is the gateway to one of the largest wilderness recreation areas in British Columbia - the
Elk Lakes Provincial Park. The park is a sub-alpine wilderness, offering excellent wildlife viewing (elk, mountain sheep & goat, moose, deer) and an abundance of bird life (Pileated woodpecker, Steller’s Jay, mountain bluebirds, dippers, humming birds).
The Elk Valley comes alive with wild flowers in the Spring. None is lovelier than the rare (and protected) calypso orchid (fairyslipper), avalanche lily, arnica, paintbrush and colourful fireweed. Hiking (40 kms of trail) and mountain biking are very popular (some hikers find hidden ‘hot springs’ high in the hills); in winter, Elkford is a major destination for snowmobile enthusiasts ... over 60 kms of mapped trails and powder bowls await you.
